I should be rejoicing right now… but instead, I’ve spent the entire day in utter shock and disappointment.
If you follow me on MySpace, you might notice bulletins and blogs I posted saying the following:
If you voted YES on Prop 8…
…PLEASE do me one last favor…. AND TAKE ME OFF YOUR FRIENDS LIST.
If you honestly believe that homosexuals should not have the same rights as heterosexual couples, then you and I have NO business being acquaintances even on a social networking site such as MySpace.
Someone previously wrote my roommate saying “you dont need to get married to be equal, we have domestic partnerships…Gay people dont need to get married, its pointless, dont tell me “OH but a man and woman can” YES they can, butt hey dont have to, there are TONS of men and women out there who have lived there lives together without being married….ALL it is, is the fact that people want to start more bullshit problems so that they can do the same thing as a domestioc partnership….theres no difference, they just dont have a WEDDING…I can argue it really, but it makes no sense. people who think this way dont realize that these issues are POINTLESS.”
Don’t give me that crap about how the right for same-sex marriage “is pointless” or that “domestic partnership is just the same thing without the wedding.”
HI. NO. IT ISN’T.
If your significant other gets into a terrible accident, as a married spouse, you are allowed into that ambulance or hospital room immediately. However, guess what? With Prop 8, since gay marriages are no longer valid, GAYS WON’T GET THAT SAME RIGHT.
Now tell me… how is THAT “the same thing, just without the wedding?”
There is also a difference between a WEDDING and a MARRIAGE.
I know couples who don’t go through with a fancy WEDDING CEREMONY, but are still married… you know, with a “little” thing called a MARRIAGE LICENSE. Their marriage is still HONORED, RESPECTED, and VALID.
And you know what? I know couples who choose not to get married or have a wedding, and just want to spend the rest of their lives together anyway….
…BUT THEY AT LEAST HAVE THE OPTION AND RIGHT TO GET MARRIED IF THEY SO CHOOSE.
With Prop 8, gay couples DON’T.
HOW the hell does one think that’s fair? and “no big deal?” and “pointless?”
Before anyone writes me to say “But Sarah, everyone is entitled to their own opinion”–
I NEVER said that they weren’t. All I’m saying is that this is an issue I feel so strongly about… and if you agree with the revoking of equality, then you and I have no business even speaking to each other. We just won’t get along so you might as well save some time and take me off of your list.
Before anyone starts accusing me of being stubborn and not wanting to get to know anyone who has ANY differences with me–
Again, that’s not what I’m saying at all, so don’t even go there. I am VERY well aware that everyone is different with different minds and different thoughts. My friends, family, and I don’t always see eye to eye on a lot of different things in life…. but you know what? We ALL DO believe in EQUAL RIGHTS.
Hell, I even have friends who are UNCOMFORTABLE with same sex couples… and despite their personal feelings, they still voted NO on Prop 8 because they don’t believe that gay couples should have their RIGHTS TAKEN AWAY just because they are gay.
“What kind of father would take his own daughter’s rights away?
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?”
- Pink’s “Dear Mr. President”If you voted YES, don’t bother arguing. Just DELETE ME FROM YOUR FRIENDS. You won’t be able to change my mind, and chances are, I won’t be able to change yours. So just save your time.
I may or may not return to my normal blogging tomorrow. We’ll see if I can shake off this feeling of wanting to vomit or not.
