So the end of last week was very exciting for me.
If you have been following me for years, you know that I have spent most of my life working completely freelance (by choice). Normally I am all about being able to work with whomever I wish, whenever I want. This, however, is not always an easy thing at all, and it requires a lot of hustling– a rush that, to me, has been both thrilling and nerve-racking at the same time.
I have come a long way since high school, starting from music fan to street teamer; street teamer to label representative; label representative to photographer/designer. When I moved to Los Angeles in 2004, aside from photography and design, I grabbed a job at a screenprinting company. From there, it was designing and marketing for Warner Bros. Records. After my departure, it was back to being completely freelance. Office hours, at that time, were just not for me.
I’ve spent these past few years busting my ass. In 2007, I spent nearly all year on tour, and at the end of it all, ended up getting screwed out of $800 by people I trusted. Needless to say, I was left jaded on the music industry. However, I believe that everything happens for a reason, ended up working parttime for a marketing firm, and a few months later, I got a call from this company.
What was supposed to only be just me going in to shoot a few pilots as an actress (which is really funny to me considering I have never considered or really had an interest in acting, and I definitely cannot act… at all) turned into me designing mockup microsites for this thing… and next thing I know, I am being handed a contract to freelance design for this company. I, of course, took it.
I seem to have come in at a good time, and soon, the company was purchased by Walt Disney and we eventually moved into our own building. I have spent the past year and a half making this company’s work a priority, still taking other gigs as well, and sacrificing sleep for my passions in life.
After turning down tour offers and a fulltime job with some other company because I have had my eyes (and heart) set on this particular job… I guess it was only a matter of time before what I’ve been wanting to happen, finally happened.
Today marks the first official day of my new fulltime placement with this company… and I couldn’t be any happier right now. I have been working hard for this, and I know that even though I hit this point, there is a lot of hard work and learning ahead of me still. It’s exciting, really.
Goodbye music, hello movies.
With that being said, time for me to get back to work.
