So, while we were at Sunset Beach in Oahu, we decided to take advantage of the clear teal water and do some snorkeling. Karri, Alicia, and I were out in water about 15 feet deep about a 1/4 mile from shore, enjoying looking at the fish flitting about below us. All of a sudden, Alicia starts splashing about. I look up and she points and yells something with her snorkel still between her teeth. I immediately think “Tiger Shark” since they are very common in Hawaii and she has half climbed onto her board. Then she yells “Turtle! Turtle! To the right! Sea Turtle!” I dove back under and swam forward towards where she was pointing. I cannot begin to tell you how scary it is to see a huge black shape appear out of the water not 10 feet from you, even if you know what it is.

It was, in fact, a HUGE green turtle. It was easily larger than our boogie boards and was lazily swimming in front of us. We grabbed the underwater camera and snapped pictures, following it until it caught a current and headed off into deeper water. I was rather worried that a Tiger would be around since they love to nom on them so I was diving to the bottom trying to see what was going on around us.

There were no sharks to be seen but we did get to swim with him for a while before he swam off and I get to remember forever that I swam with a sea turtle in the wild. Mahalo Hawai’i for a wonderful last night here!

Having fun in the sun,

while what I really want to see in Hawaii is this:

Wanna makeout?
Sunshine and warm water is always rad but I am all for shark hugging. They tell me it is called “shark diving” and hugging in discouraged but look at that cute little face with hims ickle toofs and hims big smile! How can you not want to hug that shark and cuddle him and love him and call him ‘Fred’.
We’re going to go shark diving if it kills me.
No pithy jokes necessary.
